Multi-organ Dysfunction in MPS VII

Due to ß-glucuronidase deficiency, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) accumulate throughout the body

MPS VII is caused by mutations of the GUSB gene, which results in a deficiency of the ß-glucuronidase enzyme.

ß-glucuronidase plays a key role in the breakdown of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The inability to properly break down GAGs causes them to build up in lysosomes.

GAGs are mucopolysaccharides that build up in organs and tissues in patients with MPS VII. This buildup can lead to debilitating and progressive multi-organ dysfunction.
